History

In mid-winter of 1903, an egg shaped Corliss safe was bought in Cincinnati and shipped by the C & O and Eastern Kentucky railroads to Webbville, KY. Once at Webbville, The Blue Goose (train) was met by Harris Moore and the safe was unloaded off the freight car. From there the safe was pulled 12 miles over several days to its temporary location, The Gambill Store in Blaine, KY. “The Bank of Blaine”, as it was originally called, had $15,000.00 for it’s beginning assets, with Harry Gambill, the bank’s first president, Mr. Ruben Berry, as the vice president, A.S. (Sell) Conley, cashier, and the first depositor, J.W. Hubbard.

Never faltering, the bank prevailed through various struggles of the 30’s and 40’s, including the Great Depression, World War II, and other economic trials that effected so many other parts of our country, but they never closed their doors, nor did they recognize the “bank holidays” of those times.

People of the region and the area’s resources, of coal, farming, gas, oil, and timber, are accredited to the banks 100 years of service and success.

In the year of 1946, at the Bank of Blaine is where the Burton family began their careers in the banking business, with H.G. Burton Sr., as the cashier, and his son John L. Burton Sr., the assistant cashier.

By 1948, the original $15,000.00 capital stock was doubled. The 50’s brought about the bank’s Golden Anniversary, which was held in 1953; and well over it’s one million dollar mark and several years later, the bank began to take note of the local development of the area.

During the 60’s The Bank of Blaine underwent many changes, including the renovation, ultimately, producing the building, known today, as the Blaine branch for Peoples Security Bank.

Also, by this time, C.F. Gambill, was the bank’s president, with H.G. Burton, Sr., vice president, his son’s J.L. Burton and H.G. Burton II, as cashier and assistant cashier.

It was in 1963, when the Burton Brothers purchased the controlling interest and then in 1964, John Lee Burton Sr. was elected President of the bank.

It was in the late 60’s when the bank began to consider Lawrence County’s economic and financial direction. The officers of the Bank of Blaine decided a new location in our county seat, Louisa, could service the growing financial needs of the people, better than remaining in Blaine.

By the early 70’s, the bank was over the 3 million dollar mark. A new building was being planned in Louisa and designated to be the center of the banks operation, with the bank of Blaine Bank to become the branch office.

This transformation brought about a new name, Peoples Security Bank. In 1972, John L. Burton Jr. joined the bank and became cashier of the new facility. Also, continuing the bank legacy, Joseph E. Burton came to work for the bank in 1978.
Assets over 26 million, technology, new jobs and expanding services, again, brought on more renovations, updates and changes in the 80’s.

By July of 1995, construction on the main facility (Louisa) began, in order to offer the bank’s customers modern banking and other conveniences.

Peoples Security bank had an open house on October 19, 1996, where some of the 3,000 customers and friends came to celebrate the new renovations and the 50th anniversary of John L. Burton Sr.’s dedication and labor to Peoples Security Bank. That same year, Joseph E. Burton was elected cashier of the bank.

From it’s simple beginnings, through the past century to the current date, Peoples Security Bank now has capital assets in excess of $46,000,000, has 30 employees and offers full checking and savings account services, with free checking to senior citizens and students, club accounts of various kinds, lending services, three drive-thru windows, three ATM locations, and an informational website.

The bank is under the direction of John L. Burton Jr., as President & CEO, and Joseph E. Burton, Executive V.P. and Cashier. The Board of Directors include: John L. Burton Jr., Guinola Burton, Harry G. Burton III, M.D., Homer Short and Joseph E. Burton.

The Blaine Branch of Peoples Security Bank is still in service and is under the management of Edna Arrington.

The bank continues to pride itself in being The Bank of Friendly Service, and continues to hold true to it’s motto “If you are a customer, we thank you for your patronage, if not, we earnestly solicit it.”
